Alva H. Zander-Giroux , nee Mandelkow, age 96, of Thornton, IL passed away Sunday, November 25, 2012. Beloved wife of the late Amos Zander, loving mother of Karen Zander and Vern Zander, dear grandmother of 5, great-grandmother of 13 and great-great grandmother of 3; fond sister of the late Betty Mandelkow, the late Hazel Botteman, and Neal Mandelkow. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 28, 2012 from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. at St.Paul''s Lutheran Church, 508 Chicago Road, Thornton, IL. A funeral service will be held Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, with services conducted by Rev. Harold Wahl. Interment Homewood Memorial Gardens - Homewood, IL. Alva was a retired secretary for the superintendent at Wolcott School in Thornton. She was a member of the Lutheran Women''s Missionary League and a member of the Thornton Historical Society. Her interests included gardening, oil painting, travel, reading and playing the piano. She particularly enjoyed talking to elementary school age children about what school was like when she was young.
