Bonnie Poortenga

Bonnie Poortenga, née Amptmeyer, age 74, of South Holland, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

Bonnie was the beloved wife and best friend of Timothy Poortenga. She was a devoted and loving mother to Timothy Poortenga Jr. and his partner, Vanessa Tiradentes, parents of Keanu; Kristin Poortenga, mother of Maksim; and Kelly (Brad) Eastman, parents of Madelyn and Brooklyn. She was a proud and cherished grandmother whose grandchildren brought her endless joy.

She was preceded in death by her loving parents, John and Lois Amptmeyer.

Bonnie dedicated more than 45 years of her life to caring for others as a registered nurse, serving patients with compassion, kindness, and unwavering dedication at several hospitals throughout her career. Her gentle heart, caring spirit, and selfless nature touched the lives of countless family members, friends, coworkers, and patients.

Growing up at the Gun Lake cottages, Bonnie developed a lifelong love for summers at Gun Lake. Those cherished days spent with friends, relatives, and extended family created treasured memories that always held a special place in her heart throughout her life.

She found joy in life's simple pleasures, especially starting each day with a warm cup of coffee and enjoying her favorite sweet treats. Those quiet moments, shared with family and friends or savored on her own, reflected the warmth and contentment she brought to everyday life.

Bonnie will be remembered for the love she shared so freely, the comfort she brought to those around her, and the lasting memories she created with her family. She was deeply loved and will be forever missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 21, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 12:00 p.m. at Smits Funeral Home, 2121 Pleasant Springs Lane, Dyer, Indiana, with services conducted by Pastor Jared Bryant.

Burial will take place at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Lansing, Illinois.
