Carmela A. Gerritsen

Carmela A. Gerritsen, nee Zavala, age 84, of St. John, IN, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 15, 2019. Beloved wife of the late Gilbert C. Gerritsen Sr. Loving mother of Judy (Louis) Clarizio, Karen (Robert) DiTola, Rhonda (Jeffrey) Bowman, Gilbert C. (Rachel) Gerritsen Jr., Michele Zavala, and Traci (Karl) McKinney. Proud grandmother of 12 and great-grandmother of six.  Dear sister of the late Mary (late Ronald) Bacon, late Edward (Patricia) Zavala, and the late Alfred (late Jane) Zavala.  Also preceded in death by her parents Frank and Angeline Zavala.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 18, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. with a memorial visitation following the service until 5:00 p.m. at Smits Funeral Home 2121 Pleasant Springs Lane (Rt.30/Pleasant Springs Ln.) Dyer, IN. Inurnment St. Mary Cemetery – Evergreen Park, IL. Carmela was a Chicago White Sox fan, and loved playing cards with her grandchildren.  She was “the best Grandma and Gigi in the whole world.”  Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association .  For further information, please contact 219-322-7300.
