Daniel G. Kirby, age 52, of Dyer, IN, formerly of South Holland, IL, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 3, 2018. Loving husband for 22 years of Rachel Kirby, nee Lugo. Devoted father of Joshua Kirby and Steven (Megan) Tolnai. Proud grandpa of Ethan, Savannah, and Greyson. Loving son of Charles and Nancy Kirby. Dear brother and best friend of Michael (Teresa) Kirby. Kind son-in-law of Adeline Lugo. Also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other family members, and furry friends Gracie and Crazy Cat Alley, and beloved Justin of 17years. Preceded in death by his grandparents James Emanuel Craven, Ann Lucille Craven, Charles M. Kirby, Matilda A. Kirby; father-in-law Raul R. Lugo, and brother-in-law Javier Maisonet. Visitation Sunday, April 8, 2018 from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. Prayer service Monday, April 9, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. at Smits Funeral Home, 2121 Pleasant Springs Lane (Rt. 30 & Pleasant Springs Lane) Dyer, IN, to Our Lady of Knock Church (501 163 rd St. Calumet City, IL) for a 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial, with Rev. Patrick Lyons officiating.
Daniel was a policeman and detective for 27 yrs. He started his police career in Harvey as a patrolman, then accepted a position as a policeman at Lynwood, IL. A few years later he accepted a position as a detective. Dan retired from Village of Lynwood in 2017. Dan was a veteran of the Persian Gulf War and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He devoted his life to the United States Army and was awarded many citations. Dan was a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 17 Hammond and Wolf Lake Rod and Gun Club in Chicago. Dan left these words, “I love my family, the outdoors, and enjoyed my life as a police officer helping others. I love you Rachel, big time! Thank you for my life, I am nothing without you.” He will be missed by his family and friends and his brothers and sisters in blue and green.
