David E. Popiolek, age 49, of Cedar Lake, IN, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 8, 2026 after a courageous battle with glioblastoma. Beloved husband of Kristen Popiolek, née Payovich. Loving father of Robert, Reid, and Tyler Popiolek. Dear son of David C. and Linda Popiolek. Cherished brother of Stacey (Scott) Gasche and Heather Campbell-Popiolek. Proud uncle of Brook, Max, Briar, and Madilynn.
Dave was a devoted husband, proud father, dedicated provider, loving son and brother, and a loyal friend. He and his wife, Kristen, shared 25 wonderful years of marriage and built a beautiful life together while raising three incredible sons: Robert (15), Reid (11), and Tyler (8).
For nearly three decades, Dave worked tirelessly to support his family. He began his career with Hadady in November 1997 and remained with the company through its acquisition by Caterpillar. Over the years, he earned the respect and admiration of coworkers and friends through his strong work ethic, unwavering dedication, and willingness to help anyone in need.
Those who knew Dave understood that work was only one part of who he was. His first passion was cars and racing. He spent countless hours in the garage building, restoring, and fine-tuning his projects. Whether working on one of his beloved Mustangs or building his own race car, Dave was always happiest with a wrench in hand. The garage was more than a workspace—it was where he felt most at home.
As his children grew, their interests became his own. A lifelong hockey fan and devoted supporter of the Chicago Blackhawks, Dave surprised many with his newfound love of soccer. Inspired by his son Robert’s passion for the game, Dave's enthusiasm quickly grew. The family enjoyed attending Chicago Fire matches together, cheering on their favorite players, especially Dave’s favorite, Philip Zinckernagel.
Whether on family vacations or taking the boys fishing, Dave treasured every moment spent with those he loved. He took great pride in supporting his sons' interests and activities. From driving across the country for Robert’s soccer tournaments and robotics, to attending robotics competitions with Reid, to watching MrBeast videos with Tyler, Dave found joy in simply being together. Family game nights and shared experiences were among his greatest pleasures.
As life became busier and there was less time in the garage, Dave developed another passion: becoming a skilled pitmaster. He devoted himself to perfecting smoked brisket, pulled pork, and ribs, always experimenting with new techniques and recipes. Friends and family eagerly anticipated gatherings where Dave shared the fruits of his labor, especially when paired with one of Kristen’s homemade desserts. It was often suggested that the two should open a restaurant featuring Dave’s smoked meats and Kristen’s sweet treats.
Dave’s kindness, generosity, sense of humor, and unwavering love for his family will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was loved beyond measure and taken far too soon.
Family and friends will gather on Saturday, July 25, 2026 to Celebrate the Life of Dave Popiolek at Andorra Banquets in Schererville, IN from 11am to 4pm
