Donald Edward Arnell

Donald E. Arnell, a lifelong public servant, attorney, businessman, and devoted family man, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, leadership, and commitment to community. Born on July 15, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, Don spent his life serving others through the law, public office, his church, and his family. He was a longtime resident of Chicago Heights, IL, Dyer, Indiana, and Culver, Indiana.

Don Graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago in 1953 and went on to receive his Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago Law School in 1956, beginning what would become a distinguished career in law and public service.

In 1957, Don began practicing law in Chicago Heights, Illinois, where he built a respected practice that spanned more than four decades until his retirement in 1998. His dedication to fairness and justice earned him the trust of clients and colleagues alike.

Don’s commitment to public service was evident throughout his career. In 1961, he was elected Bloom Township Justice of the Peace and served as Circuit Court Magistrate from 1961 to 1965. He was elected twice as Bloom Township Supervisor in 1965 and 1969, serving with distinction during a period of growth and change in the community. In 1972 and again in 1974, he was elected Illinois State Representative for the 10th District where he worked diligently on behalf of his constituents and the State of Illinois.

Beyond his legal and legislative work, Don demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit by establishing the Arnell Auto Group in 1988. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Mutual Trust & Savings Bank from 1991 to 1995, providing steady leadership and sound guidance. For recreation, Don enjoyed boating and waterskiing on Lake Maxincuckie in Culver, Indiana.

A man of deep faith, Don was a devoted member and Elder of the Presbyterian Church of Our Savior in Chicago Heights. His church community was central to his life, and he served it with humility and dedication. In recent years Donald and Jeanne have attended Faith Church, Dyer.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Albert Arnell, and his brothers, Lennart (late Lucille) Arnell and Roland (late Betty) Arnell.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Jeanne Tiberi Arnell; his sons, Mark Arnell (Carol Ann) and David Arnell; and his cherished grandchildren, Blair Arnell and Carter Arnell. He also leaves behind his sister Irene Arnell Antilla (Tacoma, WA) and many nieces and nephews who will remember him for his wisdom, kindness, and steady presence.

Donald E. Arnell will be remembered as a man of principle, dedication, and quiet strength — a trusted counselor, respected leader, and loving husband, father, and grandfather. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished and the community he faithfully served.

Visitation for family and friends will be held Wednesday, August 12, 2026 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 12:00 p.m. at Smits Funeral Home, 2121 Pleasant Springs Lane, Dyer, IN with Pastor Andy Nearpass officiating.
