Dr. Joel H. Nederhood, age 94, of Munster, IN, went home to his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 2, 2025. Beloved husband of Mary Lou Nederhood, nee Steigenga. Loving father of Maria (Tom) McDevitt, Carol (Dr. William) Crevier, and Pastor David Nederhood. Cherished grandfather of Teresa, Kim, Melissa (Will), Matt (Lupita), Joel (Katie), Janaya, Alejandra (Daniel), Emmanuella (Immanuel), Andrew, Davison, Dena (Hoya), Joshua (Emma), Caleb (Elizabeth) and Mary Grace. Great-grandfather of Nicholas, Gracie, Allison, Alaina, Rachel, Jaxson, Natalie, Jia, and Adela. Dear brother of Don (late Ruth) Nederhood, late Gay (late Gerard) Vander Zyden, late Mirth (Rev. Jack) Vos, Eunice (late Jerry) Barthel, and Joy (Lee) Conklin. Dear brother-in-law of late Norwin (late Lois) Steigenga, Lorraine (late John) Schuitema, and John (Judy) Steigenga. Uncle of many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Dena Nederhood.
Dr. Nederhood attended Calvin College, Calvin Theological Seminary, and Free University of Amsterdam. He taught at Westminster Theological Seminary and Trinity Seminary in Deerfield, and was the Chancellor at Ukraine Evangelical Theological Seminary. Dr. Nederhood was a radio and television minister at the Back To God Hour for 35 years. He was an author and a speaker, and served Cottage Grove Christian Reformed Church as their pastor for over 10 years. Dr. Nederhood was a United States Army Veteran. The family of Dr. Joel Nederhood would like to thank all of the persons who provided personal care to him during this past year within his home. Your extraordinary love and care for him and our mother will long be remembered.
Visitation for family and friends will be held Sunday, December 7, 2025 from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. at Bethel Christian Reformed Church, 3500 Glenwood-Lansing Rd., Lansing, IL. (The funeral service will be live streamed from Smits Funeral Home Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/SmitsFH). Following the service, there will be an additional time of fellowship and refreshments with the family. Private family interment Wednesday, December 10, 2025 at 12:00 pm. at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery – Elwood, IL.
