Edward Handzel, age 85, of Crete, IL (formally of Dolton) born on November 30, 1936 in Chicago, IL. He passed away on December 13, 2021. Beloved husband of 52 years to the late Carolyn Handzel. Brother to the late Eugene Handzel. Edward is survived by his four daughters; Cathy Handzel (Eric Brungardt), Cindy (Jack) Conley, Chris (Rick) Pusateri, and Carrie (Billy) Worthington. Proud Grandpa to his two grandchildren Carly (Jon) Hlebasko and Jared Conley. Brother-in-law to Cindy (late Carl) Remesnik. Uncle to Mike (Tammy) Remesnik and Rob (Michelle) Remesnik.
Edward attended Austin High School in Chicago and graduated as an ROTC Major. He went on to complete 6 years in the US Army Reserves. He earned a BA in Political Science from Roosevelt University in Chicago, 1960. His career started at Brunswick Corporation and in 1965 he became a Credit Manager at U.S. Steel in Chicago. While working and raising his family, he also owned and helped run his wife, Carolyn’s, interior design business Handzel’s Design Galleries in Dolton and Glenwood, IL. After a long career at U.S. Steel he took the position of Village Administrator for the town of Dolton, IL. He was active in many organizations including the Chamber of Commerce and the Planning Commission. After retiring, he traveled with his wife to historic areas from Virginia to California and kept in close touch with a wide circle of loving friends and family.
At Edward’s request, there will be no memorial service. Burial at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Calumet City will be private. The family wishes memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Calumet Area . Arrangements entrusted to Smits – Steger Memorial Chapel, 3045 Chicago Road, Steger, IL 60475.
