Elaine D. E. Charmin

Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Elaine D. E. Charmin, nee Withers, age 87, of Schererville, IN, passed away on June 1, 2026.

Elaine led a full and varied life, defined by her warmth, optimism and enduring love for those closest to her. Born in the English countryside, Elaine pursued her studies in London, becoming a Registered Nurse. While in London, she served as a surgical nurse and a visiting nurse, traveling by bicycle across rural England to see her midwife patients. It was in London where she met her husband of over 40 years, Rom Charmin, M.D. Elaine and Rom moved to Australia, where their two children were born. They relocated to Canada before settling in the United States.

Elaine’s friends and family will remember her grace, elegance and welcoming nature. Elaine was also a voracious reader and a passionate student of history. These traits, coupled with her ability to connect with everyone and her fascinating life made her a captivating storyteller. She was truly a delight to talk to. Her parties were legendary.

She is lovingly remembered by her children, Vanessa and Hadrian; her grandchildren Noah and Charles; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Sandra (Jim) Twomey and Andrea (Ian) Vickery. Elaine was preceded in death by her husband and her parents, Glenn and Rose Withers.
