Gregg Newhuis, a devoted husband, loving father, and cherished “Papa,” went home to his Lord and Savior, on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at the age of 66.
Gregg was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois to David and Rosemary Newhuis. From a young age, his life was marked by a strong work ethic, a love for the outdoors, and a deep faith in Jesus Christ. That faith guided everything he did—how he worked, how he loved, and how he gave of himself to others.
For 32 years, Gregg faithfully owned and operated TMAC, a private finance company. Though he worked hard and took pride in his business, Gregg’s heart was always for people. He was generous with his time and resources, never hesitating to bless others in both small and big ways. His passion for justice led him to support many ministries, reflecting his desire to see the Gospel lived out in action.
Gregg loved sitting with his family and enjoying a strong cup of coffee while discussing Scripture. He also loved being outdoors—fishing, hunting, and bird watching. To his grandchildren, he was simply “Papa”—a role he cherished. As their playmate and biggest champion, he found immense joy in every moment with them.
On August 11, 1984, Gregg married the love of his life, Rebecca “Becky” Newhuis (née Peter). Together they built a home rooted in faith and love. Gregg was the devoted father of Justin (Kristen) Newhuis, Christopher (Molly) Newhuis, and Lauren (Joshua) Buffum. He was the proud Papa of Harlan David, Brooks, and Jett Newhuis, and Caleb and Micah John Buffum, with great joy and anticipation for another grandchild to Christopher and Molly Newhuis due just a week after his passing.
Gregg is also remembered as the dear son of Rosemary and the late David Newhuis, and as a son-in-law to Kay and the late Judson Peter. He was a loving brother to David (Patty), Jeff (Arlene), Kathleen (Ed), and John (Carol) Newhuis, and a cherished brother-in-law to Jeff (Vickie), Randy (Sharon), and Timothy (Phyllis) Peter. He deeply valued his extended family and the bonds they shared.
A faithful member of Crete Church, Gregg treasured worship, fellowship, and ministry. He also had a close circle of friends whom he shared many happy memories with. Strangers who entered Gregg’s home were always met with his trademark welcome: a cold Coca-Cola and the question, “Do you know Jesus?”
Those who knew Gregg will never forget his generosity, his steadfast faith, and the way he made each person feel seen and valued. His life was a testimony to the goodness of God, and his legacy will continue through his family and the countless lives he touched.
“Gregg has fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7).
Visitation will be held Monday, September 29, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. until the funeral service at 11:30 a.m. at Crete Church, 24755 S. Country Lane, Crete, IL, with Rev. Brett Revlett officiating. A private family interment will be held at a later date at Skyline Memorial Park Cemetery in Monee, IL. Lunch will be provided at the church following the service, and all are welcome to join in sharing a meal and remembering Gregg together. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Gospel Revival Ministries (www.gogoodnews.org), GEMS International Girl’s Club, and/or Crete Church (www.cretechurch.com).
