Herbert Lambert Fleming

Herbert Lambert Fleming, age 84 of Crete, IL passed away peacefully at his home on
April 14, 2023.
Herb was born on July 7, 1938 in Harvey, IL to Herbert W. and Margaret Virginia
Lambert Fleming. Herb was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Dorothy
Fleming, his parents and his daughter Becky Slagle.
Herb attended Thornton Township High School in Harvey, graduating in 1957. He
joined in the Army in 1961 and was stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas. He was
discharged from the Army in 1963 and returned to the Chicago area, where he lived
the rest of his life.
Herb worked 40 plus years as a laborer in the construction industry. He is a retired
member of Laborers’ International Union of North America Local Union Number 5
of Chicago Heights.
Herb’s hobbies included fishing and antique cars. Until recently, he owned a 1949
Ford, which he was very proud of. Herb was also a devoted Chicago Bears fan.
Herb is survived by his three daughters and their families: Sharon and Michael
Doyle of Crete, IL, Karen and Chris Doig of Concord, CA and Debbie and Mark
Henderson of Rockwall, TX. Also, surviving is his sister Annette Fleming Lange of
Naples, FL.
Herb was a devoted grandfather to Rachel Doyle of Crete, IL, Jackson Doig of
Concord, CA, Zachary Doig of Austin, TX, Josh Duncan and Jamie Wilson of Terrell,
TX, Jason Hataway of Plano, TX, Lauren Hataway of Richardson, TX and great-grand
father to Kason Duncan of Terrell, TX. Herb was also a beloved uncle to his nieces
and nephew.
The family would like to express their gratitude to our wonderful caregivers Velma
Cavazos and Alisha Teneyuca for their dedicated care of Herb.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the South Suburban Humane Society in
Chicago Heights in the Fleming name.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, April 20, 2023 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at
Smits-Steger Memorial Chapel, 3045 Chicago Road, Steger, IL. Funeral will held on
Friday, April 21, 2023 at 10:00 am at Steger Memorial Chapel. Internment
immediately following at Beverly Cemetery, Blue Island, IL.
