Herbert Alan Potts, age 74, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2018. Beloved husband of Sharon Potts, nee Knol. Devoted father of Becky Jo (late Steven) Morgan, and Kary (Joshua) Vogel. Cherished papa of Nathan Eytcheson, Collin Eytcheson, Alekzander Vogel, and Annika Vogel. Dear brother of Gloria (late Robert) Postma. Visitation Tuesday, July 3, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 7:00 p.m. at Smits Funeral Home (2121 Pleasant Springs Ln. Dyer, IN) with Rev. Richard Zekveld officiating. Private interment Oak Ridge Cemetery – Lansing, IL. Herb grew up in South Holland, Illinois, where he also met his wife, Sharon, raised his two daughters, Becky and Kary, attended Cottage Grove and Covenant Fellowship Churches, and ran his business: Wallcoverings & Coatings. Herb was very active serving both his church and community. His service spans over four decades in a variety of roles and responsibilities. At Cottage Grove Herb served as an elder, Sunday School teacher and Catechism instructor. As a team, Herb and Sharon visited and encouraged the sick and shut-in for the church’s Visitation Ministry. For CRWRC he participated in several mission projects restoring homes damaged by natural disasters. The Calvinist Cadet Corps was Herb’s passion for over 30 years. He served as a Cadet Club leader, an Illiana Council member, and eventually as a representative to the national board. He loved planning and participating in club activities, campouts, and the International Camporee. His community service included working for over 25 years on the South Holland Fire Department. At SHFD Herb was a volunteer fireman, an EMT, and a member of the Dive Rescue Team. Reflecting his enjoyment of the outdoors, Herb’s hobbies included photography, cycling, fishing, camping, and kiting.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Calvinist Cadet Corps (1333 Alger S.E. Grand Rapids, MI 49507) appreciated.
