Jacob B. Powers

Jacob, “Jake”, B. Powers, age 30, passed away on Thursday, December 4, 2025.

Jacob was the loving son of Carrie and James Sutherland Jr., proud big brother of Sophia (Alex) Lopez, and stepbrother to James Sutherland III, Jonathan (Kailani) Sutherland, and Jahmia Sutherland. Treasured nephew of Trisha (Rich) Bovara and devoted cousin of Dominic Bovara. Loving, first-born grandson of Margaret (Curt) Monarch and the late Dennis Keane Sr. He is also survived by his biological father Edward Powers, along with many other loving friends and family members.

Jacob had a deep passion for cars, specifically his lime green Mustang, which he took great pride in. He was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs. His interest in cars began early - he excelled in auto class in high school and went on to work at Ford UAW Local 588. He was hardworking and always proud of the work he did.

Jacob was also a talented musician. He loved playing the guitar and attending concerts. He had a natural gift. Jacob brought joy to all of those who he surrounded with his unique humor.

Throughout his battle with Leukemia, Jacob taught those around him what it truly means to be strong. He fought with extraordinary courage, resilience, and strength. His bravery was unwavering and the strength he showed will continue to inspire all of those who were around him.

One of the greatest comforts to his family is knowing that Jacob gave his life to God shortly before his passing, finding peace and hope in his final days.

Visitation Thursday, December 11, 2025 from 3:00—8:00 p.m. at Smits Funeral Home, 2121 Pleasant Springs Lane, Dyer, IN. Funeral service Friday, December 12, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given directly to the family.
