James Cecil "Jake" Winfree passed away peacefully on July 5, 2024, in Steger, Illinois, at the age of 88. Born on February 13, 1936, in Melbourne, he lived a full life characterized by hard work, a good sense of humor and a knack for fixing anything.
Jake spent his career at Caterpillar and Ford Motor Company, where he applied his self-taught skills to excel in his roles. After retiring from Ford, he didn't slow down but instead focused on maintaining his rental properties, showing the same dedication and care that he did in his professional life. He also enjoyed time with his beloved dog Taz.
He leaves behind his wife, Sharon Winfree, daughters Barbara Saia (Steve) and Terri L. Winfree, as well as his grandchildren Heather Drake, Angelo Dousias, James Dousias, and great-grandson Cameron Drake and great great grandson Christoper Drake. He also leaves behind many cherished Gaston family members and Winfree family nieces and nephews. Jake was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Cora Winfree, his wife of 50 years, Cleffogene (Jean) Winfree, his brothers Vernon Winfree (Shirley) and William Winfree (Obera). Jake also leaves behind step daughters Elizabeth Reed (Paul) and Aleka Lach (Tim) and step son Ted Michalopolis along with several step grandchildren.
Remembered as an honest and hardworking man, Jake's love for reminiscing about his early years growing up in Arkansas and his pride in his favorite car, the Buick Wildcat, were well-known among those who loved him. He enjoyed returning to Arkansas for the annual Pioneer Day Family Reunion. For many years he enjoyed early morning coffee with his friends at McDonalds. His ability to fix just about anything was admired by many.
A visitation to honor his life will be held at Steger Memorial Chapel, 3045 Chicago Road, Steger, IL, 60475. The visitation will be on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.. This will conclude the services in Illinois.
A visitation in Arkansas will be held on Thursday, July 11, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. noon at Eddie’s Family Funeral Home, 79 Ballpark Road, Melbourne, Arkansas. Interment to follow at Violet Hill Cemetery - Violet Hill, Arkansas.
Jake's legacy of resilience and dedication will live on through his family and all who knew him.
