James David Swan

James David Swan, age 64, of Cedar Lake, Indiana, formerly of Thornton, Illinois, peacefully passed into glory on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

Loving husband of Tammie (Maatman) Swan. Devoted father of Paige (Ryan) Wories, Hayley (Dave) Jabaay, and Dallas (Zach) Zylstra. Proud Papa of Oliver, Graham, and Jensen Wories; Palmer, Sutton and Navy Jabaay; Makenna, Easton, Oakley, Baker and Baby Zylstra (arriving February 2027, Lord willing). Beloved son-in-law of Rodger Sr. and Sharon Maatman. Dear brother of Penny (Dan) Kukulski and Jackie (Joe) Petrelli; brother-in-law of Todd (Mary Kay) Maatman, Troy (Rebecca) Maatman, Robin Maatman, Rodger Jr. (Cheryl) Maatman, and Roxanne (Ted) Panek. Fond nephew and uncle to many. Preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Pegi Swan.

Jim’s greatest joy was spending time with those he loved, and his greatest hope was found in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He will be remembered for his giant smile and gift of storytelling. A lifelong baseball fan, he enjoyed spending time outdoors and found great delight in music. He was dearly loved by his family, friends, and church family and will be deeply missed.

Visitation, Friday, October 2, 2026 from 3:00 – 8:00 PM at Smits Funeral Home, 2121 Pleasant Springs Lane, Dyer, IN. Funeral service Saturday, October 3, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Crete Protestant Reformed Church, 1777 E Richton Rd, Crete, IL, with Rev. Joshua Engelsma officiating. Private family interment will be held prior to the service at Oak Ridge Cemetery – Lansing, IL. A lunch will be served at the church following the service, and all are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Protestant Reformed Christian School (www.heritagechs.org).
