JoAnn “Chickie” Sylvester Martin age 88 of Steger, IL, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, July 27, 2025.
Chickie was preceded in death by her loving parents, Vincent Sylvester and Jane (Chirumbolo) Sylverster, and her beloved husband, James “Jimmy” Martin. She was the last surviving sibling of Louise Henn (Chick), Mary Jane Boehrnsen (Glen), Phyllis Borsilli (Joe), Vincent “Jimmy” Sylvester (Sharon), and Rita Roesner (Russ).
Loving mother of four children: Joe (Sharon), Jeff (Heidi), Jimmy, and Jill (Don) Raymond. Cherished grandmother to Stephanie, Gia, Trevor (Taylor), Frances, Sarah, Alex, Peter, and Anna (Daniel).
Chickie became the proud owner of J. Martin’s Tap in 1976 following the sudden passing of her beloved husband. A strong-willed and determined woman, she made her mark in a male-dominated industry, running the neighborhood tavern for over 60 years. J. Martin’s Tap wasn’t just a bar—it was a cornerstone of the community, a place where friends and family gathered to celebrate, share stories, and create lasting memories.
Chickie was a friend to all—young and old alike. Known for her direct, no-nonsense attitude and her open heart, she was both a straight shooter and a compassionate confidant. You always knew where Chickie stood, and you always knew she cared.
She lived a rich and full life, embracing every moment and every opportunity for joy. She loved cooking, golfing, traveling, dancing, celebrating holidays, BBQs in the backyard, and most of all, spending cherished time with her grandchildren. Her lifelong friendships with Flora, Joanie, Betty, Sheila, Gloria, and Brenda brought her immense joy, and their vacations together were filled with laughter and unforgettable memories. She held a special place in her heart for her niece, Linda (Boehrnsen) Fox, along with many other beloved nieces and nephews.
Chickie was a true champion of the people she loved. She supported numerous causes close to her heart, including local athletic programs in Steger, St. Liborius, and Marian Catholic High School. She was a dedicated member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Exceptional Children’s Charity. Her adventurous spirit, quick wit, and infectious laughter made every gathering brighter.
To know Chickie was to love her. She embraced life with open arms and an open heart, leaving a lasting impact on everyone lucky enough to call her a friend.
