John P. Darnell

John P Darnell, age 75, of South Chicago Heights, Illinois, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 22, 2026. Beloved husband of Sherry Darnell nee DeFrank. Loving father of Michael (Kimberly Smith) Darnell and Matthew (Suzanne Das) Darnell. Cherished step-grandpa of Evan, Madeline, and Tara. Dear brother of Virginia (James) Page, Marcha (John) Osgood, and the late Larry (Vickie) Darnell. Dear brother-in-law of Sheila (Richard) Husarik.

John was a truly remarkable man who gave so much to others. He retired as a skilled electrician with the IBEW 134 and served our country with great honor as a Vietnam War veteran, receiving both the Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals. He was so talented with his hands, even building his own home and crafting a 1928 Model A Street rod from the ground up in his garage. John also dedicated over 30 years of service as the South Chicago Heights Police Commissioner. When he wasn't working, he loved the simple joys of reading, fishing, and, most of all, sharing laughter and love with his dear family and friends.

Memorial gathering Monday, July 27, 2026 from 3:00 until time of prayers 6:30 p.m. at Smits – Steger Memorial Chapel, 3045 Chicago Rd., Steger, IL 60475.
