Kurt Theodore Weiss of Miller Beach, IN, died Sunday March 11, 2018. Kurt was born February 19, 1958 in Hammond Indiana, to Bennett and Verna Weiss. He grew up in Lansing, IL, graduated from T. F. South High School in 1976 and received a BA degree from the University of Chicago in 1981. For the past 24 years he worked at Michael Baker Engineering as an Editor, Writer and Project Lead.Kurt’s life was one of devotion to family and friends, volunteering, mentoring, and traveling. He was active in both the Miller Beach community and with Crete Church, Crete, IL. He was a 42 year kidney transplant recipient who did not allow his illness or disabilities to define him. Kurt was known for his kind, gentle, caring spirit, and for his insight and wit. An avid reader and lifelong learner he was well versed in any subject. He was a big Cubs and Green Bay Packers fan and he baked unforgettable pies. He encouraged many hurting people to believe in themselves - this is his greatest legacy. Kurt is survived by his sister: Polly Weiss and brother-in-law Robert Kasper; foster mother: Rebecca Wolverton; foster sisters: Jennifer (David) Schroeder, Stephanie (Darrel) Wynkoop, Nephews and nieces Adam Kasper, Sarah Kasper, James Schroeder, Clara Schroeder, Jacob Wynkoop and Emma Wynkoop; uncle John (Jody) Gregory and many beloved cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Ben and Verna Weiss and his brother, Mark Weiss. A Celebration of Life Service will be Friday, April 6, 2018 at Aquatorium Miller Beach, 6918 Oak Ave, Gary, IN. A memorial visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the service at 5:00 p.m. In Lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the National Kidney Foundation, Faith in Action (inner city youth), Christ Cares Ministries (supporting the homeless).
