Michael John Schaaf

Michael John Schaaf, age 48, of Valparaiso, IN, passed away Saturday, February 6, 2021.  Loving husband of Kelly Schaaf, nee Mulholland.  Loving son of Marcia and the late Fred Schaaf, Jr.   Dear brother of Fred (Terri) Schaaf, Sheryl (Eric) Bontrager, and Daniel (Sarah) Schaaf. Proud uncle of Matthew, Kyle and Timothy Schaaf, Jonathan and Emma Bontrager, and Cara and Lukas Schaaf.

Mike loved the outdoors, including fishing, shooting and archery, and his dogs Mack and Brody. He was proud of his accomplishment of becoming a master diver. His favorite vacation destination was in Mexico, and his favorite pub was Franklin House in Valpo.  He was proud to be a garbage man and loved working with his trash buddies.  He dearly loved his wife Kelly, his best friend, travel companion and partner for life.  He enjoyed spending time with his friends: Dave Eenigenburg, Doug Voss, John Gouwens, Tim DeBoer, Matt Lytle, Brett Staal, Chad Schmidt, Chad Tebben, and the late Darryl DeVries.  Mike was stubborn, witty, and always stood his ground. He was sweet, kind, loving, sensitive, full of life and never made you second guess how he felt about anything. Special thank you to Doug Voss and Kristin Schmidt for being there the past several days. Mike was loved by many and will be truly missed.

Visitation for family and close friends will be held Saturday, February 13, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Smits Funeral Home, 2121 Pleasant Springs Lane, Dyer, IN. Celebration of Life will be held Saturday from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Centennial Park (1005 S. Centennial Drive, Munster, IN).  Memorial contributions may be given to Porter County Animal Shelter in Valparaiso.  For more information, please call 219-322-7300
