Minnie Unger, born August 16, 1937, entered eternal rest in the comforting arms of her Savior April 27, 2026. She was the seventh of eight children born to Reverend Theodore Williams, Sr., and Eunice James Williams, and from her earliest years, she embraced her family’s deep tradition of faith in Jesus Christ. Minnie gave her life to the Lord as a child and remained steadfast in her walk with Him throughout her earthly journey. If she could sing to us now, her voice might rise with “Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine” or “Jesus Is All the World to Me.” We rest assured in knowing she has found peace in His presence.

Minnie was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Walter Newton, and together they were blessed with three daughters: Phyllis Johnson, Sharon Newton, and Karla Taylor. She was a loving grandmother to Beverly Nicole Johnson (daughter of Phyllis) and Amber Lynn Taylor (daughter of Karla), and a cherished mother-in-law to Gregory Taylor and Donald Johnson. She is survived by two sisters, Naomi Nickerson (Melvin) and Annette Boling, and a host of nieces and nephews. Family was her joy, and her love for them was a reflection of her faith, patience, and devotion.

A gifted communicator, Minnie possessed an eloquence in both speech and writing. She made history as one of the first Black telephone operators at Illinois Bell, then shared her talents in advertising with the Chicago Defender. Her professionalism and determination opened further doors at the Chicago Sun-Times, the University of Chicago, and ultimately the City Colleges of Chicago, where she retired as a respected college administrator.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Minnie was a pillar of faith in her church community. She mentored countless “daughters of the faith,” offering guidance, encouragement, and a listening ear to all who sought her wisdom. Her legacy of prayer, love, and faith has left an indelible mark on many lives.

Minnie’s final message to all who knew her is simple yet profound: she loves you, she never stopped praying for you, and now she has heard the words she longed for—“Well done.”
