Nina J. McCarthy (Merlo) 100 years of age, born in 1914 to Luigi And Lucia (Baggio) Merlo who emigrated to the United States from Italy via Ellis Island passed away peacefully on October 25, 2014. Married to Robert A. McCarthy who passed away in 1993, predeceased by her brothers Daniel Merlo, Louis Merlo and her sister Ida (Merlo) Golnick. Met and married her husband Robert in 1932 and celebrated 61 anniversaries. Beloved mother to Eileen (McCarthy) Dempsey and her husband (Philip) and her son Robert W. McCarthy and his wife Jeanie.Grandmother to Paul W. Dempsey and his wife Sara K. Sherry, Janice Dempsey and her husband Frank Dawicki, Lisa Dempsey, Laura Cann and her husband Kevin, Jennifer L. McCarthy and Robert C. McCarthy and his wife Kelly. Great-Grandmother to Malikkah Gamble and her husband James, Liam Dempsey and his wife Mary Kate, Patrick Dempsey, Ryan Dempsey, Taylor Scott, Christopher Scott and his wife Franchesca and Grey R. McCarthy. Great-Great Grandmother to Alanna Gamble, William Dempsey and Lilliana Scott. Aunt to Linda, Carol, Dawn, Daniel, Gary, Kevin, Brian, Margo, Lois, Judy and Nancy. Survived both the Great Depression and the Spanish Flu. Outstanding baker and cook especially bread, cookies, pies and home made ravioli and pasta. Lifetime knitter and expert at crocheting, knitted 1000's of baby slippers for children's hospitals including St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Knitted much sought after pot holders for friends and family. Visitation, Thursday, October 30, 2014 from 10:00 A.M. until time of funeral Service 12:30 P.M. at the Smits, Steger Memorial Chapel 3045 Chicago Rd. Steger, Il. 60475.
