Raymond Joseph LaPorte , age 74, of Dyer, IN, passed away Friday March 9, 2018. Beloved husband of Joan LaPorte, nee Benni. Loving father of Kevin LaPorte and Brian LaPorte. Dear brother of Dennis (Marj) LaPorte and Richard LaPorte. Brother-in-law of Kenneth (Rose Mary) Benni, Janis Powell, and David (Sue) Benni. Fond uncle of several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents Carmel and Ann (nee Filippi) LaPorte.

Visitation Thursday, March 15, 2018 from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Smits Funeral Home 2121 Pleasant Springs Lane (Rt.30 & Pleasant Springs Ln.) Dyer, IN. Funeral service Friday, March 16, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Charles Niblick officiating.

Dr. LaPorte was a graduate of Northern Illinois University. He began his career teaching at Thornridge High School, then spent three decades as guidance counselor, principal and superintendent in the Beecher School District. After retiring from Beecher, he continued to educate student teachers at Eastern Illinois University, and served as a mentor to many graduate students. Ray was an avid golfer and loved the beach. He enjoyed travelling and spending time with his family.
