Rich Riddering, 75, of Schererville, IN (formerly South Holland, IL and Calumet City, IL) passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 6, 2018. Rich is survived by his wife of nearly 57 years, Monterey Riddering, son Rick (Susan) Riddering, daughter Kim Riddering, two granddaughters, Allison (Aaron) Amptmeyer and Anne Riddering, one great-granddaughter, Holland Amptmeyer, and two step grandsons, Chad and Nicolas Henson. He was a loving husband, a wonderful dad and a doting grandpa who would do anything for his family.
Born on December 16, 1942, Rich was the youngest of six children and uncle to numerous nephews and nieces. He was a proud member of Sheet Metal Workers’ Local Union 73 where he earned great respect as a highly gifted tradesman for 40 years. Rich was a long-time member of First Reformed Church of South Holland where he served as an elder and sang for years in the choir. In fact, he loved music and enjoyed playing and singing around the piano, jamming blues and rock ‘n roll riffs on the guitar, and strumming the ukulele. Rich coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball in Calumet City for years and he and Monty prided themselves in attending just about every sporting event their kids and grandkids participated in.
Additionally, Rich was a great encourager of others and a loving neighbor who was quick to lend a helping hand, crack a joke and a smile, challenge you with a trivia question, or just listen to stories about your day. And while he loved people greatly, he loved his Lord and Savior with all his heart, soul, mind and strength.
Rich was a recipient of a transplanted kidney, which he received nearly 11 years ago. To honor his memory, the family encourages you to become an organ donor. Or to memorialize Rich, and in lieu of flowers, please make donations to Special Olympics of Illinois (Normal, IL) or First Reformed Church (Music Program) of South Holland.
Visitation is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018 from 3-8pm at Smits Funeral Home 2121 Pleasant Springs Lane (Rt.30/Pleasant Springs Ln.) Dyer, IN 46311. Memorial service is scheduled for 4pm on Sunday, Sept. 9 at First Reformed Church, 15924 South Park Ave, South Holland, IL 60473 with Dr. Rev. Matt Waterstone officiating.
