Robert L. Heersema

Robert L. Heersema, age 85, of Beecher, IL, passed away on Monday, June 4, 2018.  Robert was born September 27, 1932 in Chicago. He married Marcia Huntington on June 19, 1959 and were blessed with 58 years of marriage. They have three children, Robert Heersema, Richard (Denise) Heersema, and Bonnie (Will) Wisher; and one grandson Chadd Robert Heersema.  Robert is also survived by his brother Harry (Marilyn) Heersema, brother-in-law Howard (Janet) Huntington, and sister-in-law Joan Heersema, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Minnie and Harry Heersema, and his brother Jim Heersema.

Bob graduated from CVS High School, worked as a plasterer for two years, and then joined the United States Navy for four years. Upon returning home, he went to college at the University of Illinois campus at Navy Pier, and then graduated from DePaul University. He taught architectural drawing at Mendel Catholic High School and Dunbar Vocational High School.  He received his Master’s degree while taking night classes and also working for the Chicago Park District. Later he refereed high school girls basketball and softball, local college volleyball and softball.

Bob and his wife Marcia lived in Roseland, the Beverly area, South Holland and Beecher. They enjoyed winters in Naples, Florida by their son Rich and his family and by their daughter Bonnie. Bob was raised in Roseland and attended First Reformed Church of Roseland. They moved to South Holland and the church became Thorn Creek Reformed.  He taught Sunday School and served as an elder numerous times. Bob also did architectural renderings of homes for many.  He leaves behind numerous close friends and neighbors.

Visitation Thursday, June 14, 2018 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Thorn Creek Reformed Church, 1875 E. 170 ^th St. South Holland, IL . Funeral service Friday, June 15, 2018 at Thorn Creek Reformed Church at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Tom Archer officiating. Interment Chapel Hill Gardens South – Oak Lawn, IL.
