Ruby Y. Green

Ruby Y. Green was born September 4 ^th , 1982 in Chicago, Illinois to Evelyn Cotton. She attended Chicago Vocational School (CVS), where she excelled in Mathematics and Art. She was lovingly known as ‘Suga’ to family and friends or ‘Little Ruby’ to those that knew her grandmother (and namesake) well. She was her mother’s first-born and her grandparents, James and Ruby Lee Green’s first grandchild. Later adopted by her grandparents, ‘Suga’ attended Southside Tabernacle Church.

Ruby , like her grandmother worked as a nurse. She had the caregiving gene that was undeniable. She helped raise her siblings, care for extended family members and neighbors. While growing up, she enjoyed playing sports, mainly basketball. There wasn’t a thing she couldn’t do. Most of her skills were self-taught, but her love of barbecuing came from her grandmother. ‘Suga’ would fire up a grill in the rain because she loved it so much. She was very active in her community and well-liked. At the age of 27, Ruby was diagnosed with Lupus. Though at times painful and caused fatigue, Lupus did not slow her down. For so long she had put others before herself and her education. She set goals for herself and achieved them; she later became a Certified Nursing Assistant and a homeowner.

Ruby made her transition on Monday, August 24 ^th , 2020 after a month’s long battle with Lupus complications. Ruby is survived by her birth mother, Evelyn Cotton; her sisters Sheena, Karen, Ebony, Dominique, Aliyah, and Brothers Ekevia “Icky” and Steven; a host of nieces and nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends.

Visitation Friday, September 4, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Smits, DeYoung-Vroegh Funeral Home, 649 E. 162 ^nd St., South Holland, IL.  Interment Mt.
