Russell T. Bridegroom

Russell T. Bridegroom, age 76, of Dyer, IN passed away on Friday, January 12, 2024, after a long illness. Beloved longtime companion and soul mate of “The Boss”, Elsa Cappello. He is survived by his two children Sam (Cathy) Bridegroom and Sarah Bridegroom (John Larsen), stepchildren Laura (Frederick) Elliott, Danny (Veronica) Cappello and Milena Cappello. He was Grampa/Papa to Nicholas, Brooke, Bianca, Joey, Gina, Katie, and Grant. Preceded in death by his parents John and Mabel Bridegroom, 1 sister, and 6 brothers. Russ retired from Prudential Insurance at 45, making it possible to fulfill his wish of being a “professional bum” more years than he worked. In his time with us, he affected countless people in profound ways – as a husband, a father figure, a brother, a trusted advisor, an advocate, and a friend. He helped many, mostly quietly with no attention being drawn to his kindness. Never being called by your actual name, instead using some other name that was more appealing to him, was a term of endearment. He was deeply loved by many and will be missed immensely.

Visitation with family and friends will be held on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the celebration of life service at 12:00 noon at Smits Funeral Home, 2121 Pleasant Springs Lane (Rt.30/Pleasant Springs Ln.), Dyer, IN. Interment to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in LaCrosse, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice, in memory of Emile O. Zilch.
