Thomas “Tom” Lee Diehl, age 76, of Steger, Illinois, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, March 21, 2026. Beloved husband of Deborah Diehl nee Davis. Loving father of Eric (Treva) Diehl and Rachael Diehl. Cherished grandfather of Tressa (Chase) Wyatt, Derek Diehl and Christian Diehl and great-grandfather of Asher Wyatt and Weston Wyatt. Dear brother of Charles (Kathy) Diehl and Gary Diehl. Preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Jean Diehl. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Tom, Thomas, Tommy, TD, Dad, Pops, Papa - whatever name you used to address him, Tom was truly a friend to everyone he met. Soft-spoken by nature, he carried himself with humility and warmth, though those close to him knew his voice could rise with passion, especially when cheering on his beloved Chicago Cubs. His loyalty as a fan extended far beyond baseball. Whether attending his children’s or grandchildren’s athletic events, school plays, band concerts, or simply supporting loved ones in everyday life, Tom was always rooting for you.
Known for his quick wit, well timed one-liners, and thoughtful wisdom often shared from behind a cloud of cigar smoke, Tom had a way of making people feel at ease and inspired. His presence was a steady and comforting force, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him. Tom dedicated many years of his life as a meat cutter at Hartmann’s Foods in Steger, IL and Super K-mart in Bradley, IL. For many Steger residents, a trip to the meat counter often included a free slice of cheese, a small but meaningful gesture that reflected his generosity and genuine connection to others. In retirement, Tom worked as a custodian at Columbia Central School in Steger, IL where he found great joy in his interactions with staff and students. He especially enjoyed watching students grow, succeed, and compete on the courts and fields, always cheering them on as he did his own family.
Tom also gave generously of his time to the Steger Little League, where he served as president, and to the Steger Recreation board as both a member and coach. He was actively involved with Cub Scout Pack 100, serving in various leadership roles. His steady presence, patience, and sense of humor left a lasting impression on those he guided.
Above all, Tom was a man of deep and abiding faith, devoted to his church and faithful to the Lord. His faith was not something he proclaimed loudly, but something he demonstrated every day through acts of kindness, humility, service, and the unwavering support of others. He believed in the importance of community, compassion, and doing what was right, and he carried those values into every role he held, as a husband, father, grandfather, friend, and mentor.
